As the sporting calendar in Australia limps back into some kind of pre-pandemic normality, an exciting new project has just been served to the community.

The Australian Open, no strangers to incorporating culture to its fortnight of over 400 matches by way of music, food, and digital collaborations recently announced the minting of 6,776 NFT tennis ‘art balls’, designed by various digital artists and historical art from Tennis Australia.

Since the NFT boom, many corporations and events have been criticised for ‘riding the wave’ and gouging money out of fans - however the AO collection arguably creates a unique level of activations and artist recognition that may become the next wave for NFT minting.

Each art ball’s metadata is linked to a randomly assigned 19 by 19 centimetre plot of each tennis court used in the open. Should the winning shot in any event land on the plot allocated to the NFT, the metadata will be updated with the match information and the holder will be awarded the winning footage and limited edition merchandise. Should one of the 11 championship points land on the plot assigned to the NFT, the holder will be awarded the physical tennis ball from the match.

The collection has currently netted up to $65,000 for digital artists, with a minimum of $500 to each artist in the hope to push NFT awareness beyond inflated sales.
